Dr. Josh Kirby

PhD, MBA, Licensed Psychologist, Partner of Sparrow House Counseling

Dr. Josh Kirby is a licensed clinical psychologist who completed his PhD at the APA-accredited Clinical Psychology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. His clinical training includes work at Parkland Hospital, Dallas County Juvenile Department, UT Southwestern Psychotherapy and Psychiatry Clinics, and Pepperdine University’s Student Counseling Center, as well as an APA-accredited internship with the University of Texas at Arlington and Moncrief Cancer Institute. His doctoral research was conducted in partnership with Baylor University Medical Center. He also holds a Master’s degree in Psychology from Pepperdine University, an MBA from the University of Mississippi, and a Bachelor’s degree in Management from Harding University.

Dr. Kirby works with individuals navigating anxiety, OCD and intrusive thoughts, and ADHD, as well as broader life challenges, including difficulty understanding and expressing emotions, managing career changes and life transitions, lingering shame or regret, questions of identity and purpose, men’s issues, and spirituality. Much of his work involves thoughtful, capable individuals who are functioning well on the outside but find themselves caught in patterns that are difficult to shift on their own, particularly around anxiety, relationships, and direction in their lives.

He also works extensively with the relational side of these struggles, helping individuals understand how patterns form over time, often shaped by early experiences, and how they continue to play out in relationships, family systems, and the emotional dynamics that influence connection to self and others.

A significant portion of Dr. Kirby’s practice is working with couples, where he has completed advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), helping partners move out of repetitive cycles of conflict or distance and toward more direct, secure, and meaningful connection. This work extends beyond the therapy room, where he leads marriage workshops and speaks on relationships and intimacy.

Dr. Kirby's approach is integrative, drawing from psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based therapies. In practice, this means helping clients better understand their internal world, relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions, and move forward with greater clarity and intention.

For clients who desire it, Dr. Kirby integrates a Christian perspective into the work in a way that is thoughtful and grounded, connecting emotional and psychological health with a deeper understanding of identity, grace, and purpose.

Before entering the field of psychology, Dr. Kirby worked across corporate, educational, and nonprofit settings and was a collegiate athlete and high school coach. These experiences continue to shape his work, particularly in helping individuals navigate expectations and the tension between performance and personal well-being, informed by his understanding of performance-driven environments and the unique pressures they carry.
